Overestimating Others

KEY TAKE AWAY

  • It’s easy for us to assume our teammates or competitors are innately ‘better’ than us, but the reality is, that’s not true

  • For those who might actually have more skills than us, they likely relentlessly trained to reach that level… given they reached that level through hard work, that means you can too, so don’t be so quick to write yourself off

ACTION PLAN

  • Select a particular player whom you view as qualified and imagine that you’re this person’s coach. What areas would you target, as a coach, for that athlete to work on, and how would you structure the practice or training to get there? If you’re too humble to think they should tell such a good athlete how to improve, consider that always looking to improve is how that person got so good in the first place.

  • Alternatively, you could consider playing against that admired player. How would you beat them? If you don’t think you could beat them at the moment, that’s fine. The idea is to come up with a plan and, in the process, show that that player has some vulnerability. (And, in fact, enlisting a coach to tell you how they’d beat you is a great way to recognize your weaknesses.
