  • Be the best self-coach you can be

ACTION PLAN

  • A trick for being a better internal coach for yourself is by talking to yourself as if you were speaking to your best friend – this idea is based on the fact people are more compassionate when speaking to others than compared to themselves

  • Ethan Kross, the author of the book Chatter, highlights the importance of using your own name and also talking in the 2nd or 3rd person when engaging in inner dialogue, a term he coined “distanced self-talk.” Rather than saying “I,” you will use the pronouns “you” (2nd-person) or “he/she” (3rd-person)

  • Next time you’re talking to yourself in your head try using the 3rd-person perspective and your name

  • For instance rather than saying “I need to adjust my positioning on that play,” you would say “Jason needs to adjust his positioning on that play”
